S1000D

The international spec for technical publications, data modules and IETMs.

S1000D is an international specification for producing technical publications using a common source database. Instead of writing books, authors write small, self-contained units of information called data modules, which are stored once and reused everywhere they are needed — in maintenance manuals, parts catalogues, training material and interactive viewers.

Jointly maintained by ASD, AIA and ATA, S1000D dominates defence programmes and is increasingly common in civil aviation and other industries. If ATA iSpec 2200 is the world of chapters and page blocks, S1000D is the world of modular, XML-based, database-driven content.

Thinking in data modules, not documents

A data module packages one procedure, one description, one fault-isolation task or one parts list, along with identification and status metadata (who produced it, its security classification, its applicability, its quality assurance state). Because each module is independent, the same wheel-change procedure can appear in the line maintenance publication and in training material without being written twice.

Every module carries a Data Module Code. Reading a DMC tells you the model identification, the system breakdown (often ATA-aligned for aircraft), the disassembly level, and the information code — a standardised number that says what kind of information it is (description, operation, servicing, removal, installation and so on).

The CSDB and how publications get built

All content lives in the Common Source DataBase. Publication modules then define structure: which data modules, in which order, make up a given manual for a given customer or configuration. From one CSDB you can publish page-oriented output and an Interactive Electronic Technical Publication (IETP) with linked navigation, applicability filtering and multimedia.

Change management is built in. Modules carry issue and inwork numbers, so a publication can be frozen at specific issues while authoring continues — and every delivered state remains reproducible, which matters enormously for airworthiness and contracts.

BREX: the project rulebook

S1000D is deliberately broad, so every project must decide which parts of it to use and how — allowed information codes, mandatory metadata, naming conventions, quality workflows. Those decisions are captured as business rules, and the BREX data module publishes them in machine-readable form so authoring tools and the CSDB can validate content automatically.
