Technical publications are the controlled library that makes that possible: procedures, parts information, structural repair limits, wiring data and operational allowances, all kept current fleet-wide through a formal revision service.

Each publication answers a different question. The AMM says how to do on-aircraft work; the IPC says which part to order; the SRM says whether structural damage is acceptable and how to repair it; CMMs cover work after a component leaves the aircraft; wiring manuals trace circuits pin to pin. Fault isolation manuals (FIM/TSM) turn reported symptoms into directed troubleshooting.
Operationally, the Minimum Equipment List defines what may be inoperative for dispatch and under what conditions, while flight crew documentation (FCOM, QRH) governs how the aircraft is operated. Together they draw a complete boundary around what may legally be done with the aircraft, by whom, and in what condition.
Revisions, effectivity and configuration
Publications are living documents. Manufacturers issue scheduled revisions plus temporary revisions for urgent changes, and every operator must incorporate them on time. Airworthiness directives and service bulletins feed this cycle — an AD may mandate an inspection whose procedure arrives via a revised AMM task or an SB work instruction.
Effectivity is the other discipline: the same manual serves many tail numbers with different modification states, so content is filtered by effectivity codes. Applying a procedure to a tail it does not cover is a serious error, which is why publications specialists obsess over configuration control.

Tech pubs teams sit at the junction of engineering, maintenance and IT.
